Celebrating 25 Years of Courage, Culture, and Connection

Last Friday (November 21st, 2025) the Aldersgate Centre in Ōtautahi pulsed with the sounds of drums, laughter, and heartfelt speeches as Tangata Atumotu marked its Silver Jubilee — 25 years of unwavering service to Pasifika communities.

What began in 2000 as a vision shared by a group of courageous Samoan nurses has grown into a movement that uplifts families, strengthens cultural identity, and champions wellbeing. Their foresight planted the seeds for an organisation, that over the last two decades have been able to offer over 20 programmes, from mental health support to youth development, all anchored in Pasifika values.

The celebration was more than an anniversary; it was a tribute to resilience and unity. Founding members were honoured for their pioneering spirit, while leaders reminded us of the significance of our vaka — the canoes navigated by our ancestors across vast oceans. Like those journeys, our work has always been about more than the present moment. It is about shaping futures, carrying culture forward, and ensuring that no one is left behind.

Guests were treated to vibrant performances from Tuvaluan, Samoan, Tongan, and Cook Islands communities: a living tapestry of heritage that reflects the heart of our mission. Each beat of the drum and sway of dance spoke of connection, reminding us why this work matters.

Looking ahead, we are committed to navigating new horizons: deepening partnerships with our providers, fostering cross-cultural collaboration, and building sustainable pathways for generations to come. As Operations Manager, Seiuli Tauamiti shared, “Tangata Atumotu stands as a beacon of hope and strength — a thriving movement that empowers communities, uplifts families, and continues to navigate new horizons.”

Twenty-five years on, Tangata Atumotu Trust remains anchored in courage and culture, steering towards a future where Pasifika communities thrive, connected by compassion, strengthened by collective action, and guided by the wisdom of those who came before.
