Papa Sua: Strength Through Support

Registered Nurse Betsy Ramalasou with Papa Sua

In October 2024, Papa Sua experienced a health scare that became the turning point for a powerful wellbeing journey. After going without essential medication for several days, he presented to hospital with chest pain and concerning symptoms. While it was not confirmed to be a heart attack, the experience prompted him to take meaningful steps towards improving his health.

Central to this journey has been the strong and trusted relationship Papa Mita built with our Registered Nurse Betsy Ramalasou.

From the beginning, Betsy provided more than clinical care. She offered consistency, encouragement, and genuine connection. Through regular monitoring, goal-setting and ongoing support, she helped Papa Mita navigate both his recovery and long-term lifestyle changes with confidence.

Managing Type 2 diabetes was one of his biggest challenges. With RN Betsy’s advocacy, Papa Sua gained access to a Dexcom glucose monitor, removing barriers and giving him real-time insight into his health. This became a key tool in helping him better understand his nutrition and stay on track.

With Betsy’s guidance, along with the support of his GP and whānau, Papa Sua committed to regular exercise and healthier eating habits. Today, he consistently attends the gym, swims, and maintains control over his diet.

The results speak for themselves. Papa has lost 20kg in just 8 months, improving both his physical health and overall wellbeing.

Reflecting on his journey, Papa Sua and his family emphasise the impact of the care he received:

“TAT is like kōpū tangata (family). Nurse Betsy’s support has been life-changing, she has changed how we see and experience the health system. We feel safe, supported, and cared for every step of the way.”

Papa Sua’s story is a testament to the power of connection in healthcare, where trust, culture, and continuity of care can create lasting change.
