Learning to ride

Semaema Lomani is in our Green Prescription role at Tangata Atumotu, where she supports our community with physical activity, health and wellbeing.

Taunese O’brien, a 44 year old Samoan women living in Ōtautahi reached out to Sem in August 2021 after taking part in the Step Ahead programme, which offers a place of acceptance and well-being for those with mental illness.

Taunese's goal is to increase her physical activity.

Taunese is not currently driving and wanted another option of transportation that could increase her motivation to be active…she decided to purchase a bike! For the past month, Sem has been helping Taunese learn how to ride her bike.

Kitted out with a helmet and bright yellow vest, Taunesse first learned the basics, balancing on her bike and steering. Sem helped by pushing her on the bike and running next to her as she got more confident.

"We’ve had two sessions now and she’s improving each time! I can see she’s gaining confidence and soon she’ll be able to go by herself” says Sem.

We’re looking forward to seeing how Taunese does on her journey!
